Why are so many lay-offs in the game industry occurring in one of the best years of gaming? #gaming

Disclaimer: I am very ignorant when it comes to business models in for-profit industries.

With some of the most amazing games being released, I would have assumed business is booming. However, every week, I hear more about mass lay-offs in major game studios. What is the cause of this?
